As part of Google's ongoing attempts to make GMail more secure they have recently introduced a series of measures intended to mitigate the threat from malicious applications.

Occasionally, GMail will flag up the WriteUpp connection as "insecure" and as a result it will not permit us to connect. You can turn off this extra level of validation by following the instructions in this Google Article:

123-Reg

Sender Name: Your Name
Sender Email: Your Email
SMTP Host: smtp.123-reg.co.uk
SMTP Port: 25 or 587
SMTP User: Your Email
SMTP Password: Your Email Password
Requires SSL: Off

There are one or two known issues associated with using 123-reg but thankfully they have produced a very useful support article, which you can read here if you are experiencing problems authenticating.

If your provider is not listed please contact your email provider. Much as we'd like to help we can't provide support for your email service

Please be aware that all email providers are not equal. Many hosting providers (like 123-reg, Fasthosts & GoDaddy) offer email as an afterthought and don't have the same infrastructure, resilience, technical support and security as the services provided by Apple, Google and Microsoft. If you are having problems using SMTP with one of the less popular providers we would recommend using a service like Google Apps.
